I have a lot of photos on my iPhone, but none of them is a "selfie." I hate looking at pictures of myself, which means I am not part of the "cool" club, using the word of the month, Selfie.
Oxford Dictionary defines "selfie" as an informal noun and define it as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website." What once was a nonexistant word, now this is a social phenomenon where practically grandmas know about it. My old grandmother takes selfies on her new Twitter and Facebook Accounts. No wonder she doesn't have a lot of followers....

TBH: I have never taken a selfie. Before the iPhone, the best way to get a quote on quote "selfie" was to drop a quarter into a photo booth at the mall. The connotation of selfie is selfish. It hints at a self-absorbed, narcissistic, the center of our own universe life where there is a hall of mirrors in which each reflection is our own. This trend has become so popular that celebrity watchers, armed with the latest handheld technology, no longer want autographs on useless scraps on paper. Instead, they are able to pose alongside super famous person and keep a memory of it- from Brad Pitt to Michelle Obama.

On the surface, and despite the slighted hint of narcissism , an occasional ‘selfie’ seems harmless enough. However, taken in context of the runner-up words of the year, some people will argue that social and cultural norms are getting more and more egotistical. The word of the year was none other than the famous dance move that Nicki Minaj has done for about 9 years now called ‘twerking’, a word that combines ‘twist’ and ‘jerk,’ with special emphasis on the latter. According to the Oxford word police: twerking refers to a person who dances “to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance." Seems like a porno already!

The world got its first real taste of twerking at the MTV VMAs when Hannah Montana performed with a XXXXing giant foam finger. When that got old, she ‘twerked’ her buttocks against the XXXXing dick of Robin Thicke (since words alone cannot really capture the this infamous moment of Cyrus’ official departure from the Disney Channel, watch it). People from all over the industry advised Miles not to make a prostitute of herself.

So the Word-of-the-Year officials are probably got it right. I can't think of any other word that so captures our tech obsessed selfish, egotistical culture, so technologically forward looking and so personally self-obsessed.
