Same-Sex Marriage Improves Health Conditions Among Gay Men

Same-Sex Marriage Improves Health Conditions Among Gay Men: Columbia University Study
Marriage equality advocates have another reason to feel dedicated to their cause today, as a revelatory new study has found that the health of gay men living in states with laws allowing same-sex couples to wed actually improves their health, even if they don't get hitched.

According to Effect of Same-Sex Marriage Laws on Health Care Use and Expenditures in Sexual Minority Men in the American Journal of Public Health, gay men's visits to local health clinics dropped significantly after Massachusetts began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2004.

Researchers from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health surveyed the demand for medical and mental health care from 1,211 Massachusetts-based gay men registered with a particular health clinic in the 12 months prior to the change, and the 12 months afterward, the BBC is reporting.

Overall, researchers found a 13 percent drop in healthcare visits among the group after the law was enacted, as well as a reduction in blood pressure problems, depression and "adjustment disorders," which could be the result of reduced stress, according to reports.

Interestingly, as HealthDay notes, lesbians weren't included in the study because there were too few who visit the clinic.

"Our results suggest that removing these barriers improves the health of gay and bisexual men," Dr. Mark Hatzenbuehler, who led the study, is quoted by the BBC as saying. "Marriage equality may produce broad public health benefits by reducing the occurrence of stress-related health conditions."

Hatzenbuehler was also responsible for a study that found that gay and straight teens who live in socio-politically conservative areas are more likely to attempt suicide, and the degree of an area’s political conservatism reflects the degree teens  are likely to attempt suicide regardless of their sexual orientation, the New Civil Rights Movement points out.

    · In The Sexual Organization of the City, University of Chicago sociologist Edward Laumann argues that "typical gay city inhabitants spend most of their adult lives in 'transactional' relationships, or short-term commitments of less than six months."[5]
    · A study of homosexual men in the Netherlands published in the journal AIDS found that the "duration of steady partnerships" was 1.5 years.[6]
    · In his study of male homosexuality in Western Sexuality: Practice and Precept in Past and Present Times, Pollak found that "few homosexual relationships last longer than two years, with many men reporting hundreds of lifetime partners."[7]
    · In Male and Female Homosexuality, Saghir and Robins found that the average male homosexual live-in relationship lasts between two and three years.[8]

    · The Dutch study of partnered homosexuals, which was published in the journal AIDS, found that men with a steady partner had an average of eight sexual partners per year.[12]
    · Bell and Weinberg, in their classic study of male and female homosexuality, found that 43 percent of white male homosexuals had sex with 500 or more partners, with 28 percent having one thousand or more sex partners.[13]
    · In their study of the sexual profiles of 2,583 older homosexuals published in the Journal of Sex Research, Paul Van de Ven et al. found that "the modal range for number of sexual partners ever [of homosexuals] was 101-500." In addition, 10.2 percent to 15.7 percent had between 501 and 1,000 partners. A further 10.2 percent to 15.7 percent reported having had more than one thousand lifetime sexual partners.[14]
    · A survey conducted by the homosexual magazine Genre found that 24 percent of the respondents said they had had more than one hundred sexual partners in their lifetime. The magazine noted that several respondents suggested including a category of those who had more than one thousand sexual partners.[15]
    · A Canadian study of homosexual men who had been in committed relationships lasting longer than one year found that only 25 percent of those interviewed reported being monogamous." According to study author Barry Adam, "Gay culture allows men to explore different...forms of relationships besides the monogamy coveted by heterosexuals."[16]
    · The Handbook of Family Diversity reported a study in which "many self-described 'monogamous' couples reported an average of three to five partners in the past year. Blasband and Peplau (1985) observed a similar pattern."[17]
    · In The Male Couple, authors David P. McWhirter and Andrew M. Mattison reported that, in a study of 156 males in homosexual relationships lasting from one to thirty-seven years:
Only seven couples have a totally exclusive sexual relationship, and these men all have been together for less than five years. Stated another way, all couples with a relationship lasting more than five years have incorporated some provision for outside sexual activity in their relationships.[18]

Right..so if a given area allows homosexuals to marry each other then there is a reduced rate of homosexuals visting their doctors due to a reduction in blood pressure problems, depression and ' adjustment disorders' even for the homosexuals that are not married....
Well we all feel better after a good cry and a booze up at a wedding party...

Something else that improves the health of gay men:

Having Easyrider and Gonzo on permanent "ignore," so that you never have to lay eyes on their predictable, imbecilic, homophobic excrescences.

Typical bath-house mentality - if you can't silence the opposition and the Word of God then bury your head in the sand and maybe it will all go away.

Judgment Day is coming for you, and for everyone else. You're not going to be able to make that one go away. And without repentance and Christ as your Savior, you're going to be in a world of doo doo.

Addressing the high rate of HIV in gay males instead of having that in permanent ignore may be a better option

They shouldn't engage in gay sex. It's a sin and a perversion and they often get gay sex diseases. It's an unhealthy lifestyle.

Nothing presented suggests that the legalization of homosexual marriage will lead to reductions on homosexual promiscuity levels or a drop in the rate in spread of HIV or AIDS. A supposed drop in blood pressure and depression does not mean there will not be an increase in those dependent upon anti-retro-viral medication in order to live. It does not amount to improved health conditions.

Furthermore homosexuality is not a legitimate differentiation between individuals. There is little to no reason to believe that such a minute standard should be given such regard to importance.
If one cannot have an argument without resorting to hyperbole, name calling and emotional rhetoric, then they have lost the argument from their first post.

A study shows that marriage equality has a positive affect on health and this is countered by some study about the average length of same sex relationships then of course the topic jumps directly to sex , none of which have anything to do with the original post. There are many 'studies', mostly derogatory, on the subject of same sex relations due to the agenda of the heterosexual majority and their wish to oppress homosexuals and roadblock any advancement of the Gay Rights Movement. If their were such a majority interested in oppressing heterosexuals and denying their Constitutional rights you would find a plethora of 'studies' about their sexual habits, infidelities, pork addictions and engagement in the same sex being labeled unhealthy with regards to Gay men. Since HIV/AIDS is spread by heterosexuals much more than by gays I would not be throwing stones in that glass house of yours and stick to the topic of the OP. The original post shows positive health effects with marriage equality. Why not debate this on its merits instead of trying to muddy the waters. Ones religion or lack thereof has nothing to do with the post nor does anyones sexual habits. Even if what has been said were true, what does that have to do with the two men that have been with one another in a monogamous relationship for 15 years, raising children and wishes to marry and the positive health affects the marriage would bring about?
