Man robs bank to get medical care in jail

"Earlier this month, Verone (pictured), a 59-year-old convenience store clerk, walked into a Gastonia, N.C., bank and handed the cashier a note demanding $1 and medical attention. Then he waited calmly for police to show up....

"In jail, Verone said he skips dinner to avoid too much contact with the other inmates. He's already seen some nurses and is scheduled to see a doctor on Friday. He said he's hoping to receive back and foot surgery, and get the protrusion on his chest treated. Then he plans to spend a few years in jail, before getting out in time to collect Social Security and move to the beach....

"The Affordable Care Act, President Obama's health-care overhaul passed by Congress last year, was designed to make it easier for Americans in situations like Verone's to get health insurance. But most of its provisions don't go into effect until 2014."

In what other developed country would someone commit a crime to get the medical care that they need?
"Indeed, not a word in the constitutional text even arguably supports the Court’s overwrought and novel description of the Second Amendment as 'elevat[ing] above all other interests' 'the right of law-abiding, responsible citizens to use arms in defense of hearth and home.' Ante,at 63."

In any country where somebody doesn't want to pay for that medical care with their own money. With this guy being in prison that means we pay for all his care with our taxes and he gets everything for free, along with three meals a day and shelter.

    He's a freeloader!

I'm sure if he had the money he'd like to pay for it himself, but what is he supposed to do if he doesn't have the money? Besides, he has paid taxes for decades so it's hardly freeloading.

In almost any country, that man would already have proper health insurance and wouldn't have to go to extremes to get the medical care he can't afford.

P.S. what about the homeless committing minor crimes to have somewhere warm to be for the winter?

P.P.S. also, note the extremely dangerous act he committed. Calmly demanding 1$ (not eve 100$...) and calmly waited.

If his taxes paid for the medical care, here is a novel idea; don't charge him taxes and that way he won't have to rob a bank.

Exactly. Most countries care about their citizens health and don't put dollar signs next to it. I wonder if you walk into a hospital in Europe if the first they they ask you for is your insurance card rather than what is wrong?

There are ALWAYS dollar signs to it.
Somebody has to pay for it.

Paying and profit are too different things. You should not be able to profit at the rates these companies are off of human suffering.

There is a different between profit and making services a premium that regular people can't pay. A doctors first priority should be his patients life over whether that patient can pay or not, after, so be it, bills must be paid, but first most, services should not be unattainable.

Hospitals and providing medical care to those in need are first and foremost a business. The goal of a business is to remain functional and able to grow. That must be remembered.

Doctors need to be paid to pay their own bills.
There is no such thing as free medical treatment or free medicine.
    Somebody has to pay.
