UK elects fascists to the European Parliament

Two fascists were elected to the EU Parliament last night, one each from North West England and Yorskhire and Humber. Have to say I'm feeling pretty sick right now.

The only consolation is the big jump in the Green Party vote, though no increase in seats.

It's a sad day. The Labour vote collapsed as was to be expected, but the Liberals, who would normally be prime candidates to clean up from scandals involving largely both Tory and Labour, didn't. Very odd. I suppose we can take some cold comfort from the fact the BNP didn't do better in the face of widespread disillusionment with politicians generally.

The intresting bit is that the BNP got fewer votes than last time. They won because absolutely no-one will vote for the fraudsters in power.

Good to see the Swedish Pirates get a seat, now if they'll only nominate Ragnar Danneskjold the cycle will be complete.

It seems to me the BNP is very similar to the French National Front party (Jean-Marie Le pen). My guess is they capitalized on the failures of Labour and the increasing economic decline.

The UK has had/is having a major scandal involving MP's expenses, where despite earning 3 times the national average pay, they have been claiming for everything from a new bath plug to a floating duck house, or moat cleaning! Politicians of all the national parties are held in general contempt, while Labour continues it's slow implosion.
The attitude to The European Parliament is ambivalent at best, so in the UK, voting in the European elections gives a handy vehicle for a protest vote, though as the overall votes for the EP have dropped every time since the 1970's, only the least apathetic do so at all. This is the background against which the BNP lost less votes than the main parties, and scraped home through the back door.
