Neglected Horse
Hey everyone sorry I've been away but I've been pulling 6 day work weeks and just don't have the time to be online much anymore. Anyways I need some serious advice on a particular situation I'm in regarding a neglected horse.
Basically my Coworker rents out stalls for people to keep horses. Well this one horse and I have bonded really really well. He's a gelded quarter horse which I named Chompy cause he constantly loves to eat. Not only is he very smart, but he reads into peoples characters really well and we've bonded quickly. Sadly he's not my horse and to make matters worse he's being neglected by his owner. The guy hardly feeds him, never mucks out his pen, never changes his water or anything! Last time he was 4 months behind on rent fee's and makes his sons take care of the horse when they "feel" like it. Needless to say Ive taken it upon myself everyday after work now to head over to my coworkers place and take care of this poor horse... Tuesday was hell because to my utter horror he was moved a couple weeks ago and I wasn't around to visit him often due to work. What I saw was this horse hoof deep in his own waste... Every square foot of a 1/4 acre was covered... It took me 3 and a half hours strait to wheelbarrow away over 9 loads of horse manure in 100 degree heat.... Then I realized why he never drank water when I was around because it was murky and almost black... So I fed him on Tuesday and since I've been sick I only got around to seeing him today... Poor guy wasn't even fed since the last time I did!! So I bought the more expensive 12 dollar bale of hay with more nutrients and a bag of oats and other grains mix for a treat. I mucked out his stall again and fed him and changed his water. While I was there watching him eat the two owner's son's come wheeling up some wilted hay and were shocked to see me there. I essentially told them the condition of the horse and that he's only surviving because I'm taking care of him. It all fell on deaf ears and they wheeled the old hay away seeing he was being fed better than what they could offer. In a nut shell I'm debating if I should call the SCBA or animal control or someone! I love this horse and it's breaking my heart seeing him neglected like this. After today I promised to go out daily no matter how tired I am to make sure he's taken care of.. My coworker has turned a blind eye cause he needs the rent money and even got angry saying that if I reported abuse of the horse I'd never be able to see the horse again... I also don't want him to be sent away but I also don't want him to suffer either... What should I do???

Offer to buy the horse from him. If they are "done" with the horse he might be willing to let it go. Horses have gotten cheap since they made it such a pain in the rear to slaughter them.

BTW... Where are you located??? $12 a bale for hay is INSANE. Here prairie Hay is running $2.75 Brome is $3.25 and Alfalfa is $3.50. Those are prices for 75 lb bales. Big rounds (1500-2000 lb) run $50-$75.

I'm in Riverside California. Sadly everything is high priced here.

According to my coworker he's not willing to sell. And it's obvious he's not willing to take care of him either... I've offered to purchase him... Speaking of which I'm leaving my house now to go take care of him.

About 10 years ago, a friend of a friend was living in a huge old farm house that had a barn next to it. The girl worked for a well respected local man who breeds paint horses - he gave her one.
I stopped by one day to see it and her but she wasn't home so, I took a look-see in the barn. Horror! She had him in a side stall with a low roof and he couldn't even straighten his neck up all the way. There was old lumber and wire on the poopie-covered floor. I didn't say a word to her but, immediately called the man and told him what was up with the horse. He took it back. End of story. Now, in your situation, you have developed an emotional bond with the animal, you think it is not being taken care of properly and you would like it to be yours. The owner does not want to sell so, it will never be yours. You have two options I see: 1) Keep caring for the horse as though it were yours and ask the man if he would be willing to share the horse. Or, 2)report him for animal abuse in which case you will most likely never see the animal again (unless they put him up for adoption). I would choose #1 and if he refused, I would follow through with #2. Your call. ![]()

1. Steal him 2. Keep caring for him 3. Report him to the powers that be (probably not going to go well) 4. Put him down None of them are really good options.

You occasionally come across poor folk in semi-rural Australia who own mangy, poorly kept horses that they refuse to sell or care for.
Usually it's because they have some vague idea of using them to race, or to breed other horses to race. Obviously a stupid plan given the horse's poor condition and their lack of knowledge on breeding, racing or horses in general, but as they say, there are no stupid plans, only stupid people. It's the same mentality that leads people to leave 4 cars rusting in their yards, with the intent to one day rebuild them. I would make a more aggressive offer to buy. While these people do not like in principle the idea of selling, since it quashes their dream of winning the Kentucky Derby, they will find it hard to resist a wad of cash in front of their face.

Try threats. Tell the guy that if he doesn't sell you the horse, you're going to start calling the powers that be and not only will they take the horse away from him, they'll charge him with cruelty to animals and levy harsh punishments against him.
