France Lifting the Veils?

It appears that the French don’t have any problem bullying Muslim women………well almost.

French Panel Recommends Limits on Face Veil
Associated Press
PARIS—A parliamentary panel that wants Muslim women to stop veiling their faces recommended Tuesday that France ban such garb in public facilities, including hospitals and mass transit, and a leading panel member said he foresees such an interdiction by the end of 2010.
The nearly 200-page report contains a panoply of measures intended to dissuade women from wearing all-enveloping veils in France. It also recommends refusing residence cards and citizenship to anyone with visible signs of a "radical religious practice."
However, there is no call to outlaw such garments—worn by a tiny minority of Muslims—in private areas and in the street. A full ban was the major issue that divided the 32-member, multiparty panel which ultimately heeded warnings that a full ban risked being deemed unconstitutional and could even cause trouble in a country where Islam is the second-largest religion.French Panel Recommends Limits on Face Veil - WSJ.com

It's a country where an openly fascist party came second in a Presidential election within the last decade. What do you expect?

Sarko himself is a little right-wing bully.

That's probably because of militant, left wing, moral-relativist jarheads.

Our women have to respect their culture when they travel to an Islamic country by wearing a Burka. They should respect our culture by taking them off when they come over here.

Do you even know what a Burka is? No western person is required to wear a burka when travelling abroad. Hijab, yes possibly, but not a burka.

My mother managed to travel through Iran with just a head scarf, covering hair not not the face.

Personally, I'm torn. If a woman wants to wear something, I want her to be able to. Even if it's a burqa. However, the wearing of a burqua can also be forced upon a woman, or NOT wearing one can be seen as immoral behavior. In this case, I want the state to help her to be free to chose.

Now, as a temporary measure, to drive home the idea that you can't force your wife or daughter or sister to wear a burqua, I would support the prohibition, provided it's understood that it's a temporary measure that will be removed eventually once the idea that women can be forced to wear one is driven out.

I doubt anyone can predict whether the prohibition would achieve this effect, though. It could just as easily backfire, with the muslims, male and female both, feeling under attack and seek safety in tradition.

If you make wearing a burqua optional, that really isn't giving muslim women a choice. If they choose not to wear one, they are seen as immoral. What kind of choice is that?
IMO, France is actually doing the right thing. Ban burquas and it will force muslims living in the West to respect Western laws and individual rights for all. If they don't like it, go back to the sand and watch camel races while you starve to death. I could care less.

And words like those are why in spite of being here, the muslims cling together, seeking protection from the surrounding world that is, in their perception, "after them".

Counterproductive is the word, IIRC.

Maybe if they didn't treat their women as slaves, we'd have a different opinion of them. But, as long as they're in OUR country, they can abide by OUR laws or go the Hell home! I see no reason to coddle any ethnic group that refuses to assimilate into our culture.

A lot of Muslim women who wear hijab of some sort or another were born in the west (I don't know any who wear the burqa, it's pretty rare), where exactly are you suggesting they go back to? Last I checked there wasn't a lot of sand in Blackburn or Birmingham.

You forget, I live near the largest population of Muslims outside of the ME, Dearborn, Michigan. They even have loud speakers on the street blaring their call to prayer 5X day, IIRC. I routinely see Muslim women in full black burquas...in the dead of the summer heat even. Of course, the males are walking around in comfortable clothes, the littlke B@#$%^ds!
And very few of them can trace more than one generation maximum from the sandbox.

Are you sure you mean burqas? Burqas are generally found in Afghan culture, if your local Muslims are from the middle east, chances are they're wearing jilbab and niqab rather than burqa, particularly if it is black. Also, you've pulled that XXXX with the largest population of Muslims outside the middle east before, and it's simply untrue.

Well, not being a metrosexual like yourself, if I see nothing but slits for eyes, I think burqua.

And I've provided you the proof before!
