It's not a youtube video. It's from Streetfire. Note the delay after the green light comes on. My son was trying to build boost on the starting line. That's why we got the AMS-1000. It's a boost controller.

I found a video of my son's prior ride, a 94Z24 with twin turbos. You'll see a small puff of smoke followed by billowing smoke as the engine sent a connecting rod through the oil pan at over 150mph. Notice, even after blowing the engine up 300' before the finish line, he still made a 9 second run.

Really nice.

If I remember right, the changeover from class racing to bracket racing was pretty abrupt in the mid seventies. Naturally, so was the changeover from 4-speeds to automatics, for better consistency. But after watching that vid, I find myself wondering if automatics wouldn’t have taken over anyway, even if consistency wasn’t a factor. They seem to have the technology today to make those autos lock up and pull strong all the way through, with a minimum of slippage. Maybe it’s always been that way for the fast cars – 9 seconds or faster, I don’t know. Even in the early seventies, I don’t remember seeing the rail jobs on television catching gears.

Somebody said a wordy dird.

I did nothing but body work all through the 80’s. I shouldn’t admit this - one of my first jobs was my younger brothers 67 Mustang with a 289. Paint job, with the addition of a big plastic box scoop on the hood. Per the instructions with the scoop, I bonded it to the hood with epoxy resin. The instructions didn’t say anything about backing it up with bolts, darn it. After 4 or 5 years, he was at Thorn Hill, kinda faded by then - some cracks around the scoop. Just as he was crossing the line (it was a high 13 second car/ about 100 mph) and that scoop let go! I wasn’t there, but he told me it must have gone 100 feet in the air. Thorn Hill management was, uh, not amused.

Top Fuelers don't use any transmissions. Thery use centrifugal clutches that engage at various times providing less and less slip.
Most other cars use some sort of automatic, either clutchless or with a clutch for starting line.
Automatics have an advantage of multiplying torque at the starting line. The disadvantage is their power loss which can be 20% with some trannies.

Losing a scoop isn't so bad. Losing 8 quarts of oil is a disaster.
